About Our Client
Our client is a growing irrigation-solutions company established in 2020, providing design, supply, and installation of irrigation systems for vineyards, citrus orchards, lucerne fields, and various other crops. They are leaders in the Boland, Paarl, Stellenbosch, and Wellington areas.
Their ethos is to deliver practical, high-quality irrigation solutions with excellent customer service, and to support agricultural clients with efficient, sustainable water management systems.
Purpose of the Role
The Draughtsman / Site Supervisor is a dual-role position combining detailed technical design (draughting) with on-site supervisory oversight. This role ensures that the irrigation systems are accurately planned on paper and then correctly implemented in the field, maintaining standards of quality, cost, safety, and timing.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Draughting / Technical Work
- Review project briefs, site surveys, soil and topographic data, and client requirements.
- Create detailed irrigation system drawings (layout plans, pipe runs, valve stations, laterals, mainlines, controllers, sensors, calibration).
- Produce materials lists, specifications, and cut lists for components (pipes, fittings, emitters, valves, control systems).
- Work with CAD or irrigation design software (AutoCAD, GIS, irrigation design tools) to develop accurate plans.
- Revise drawings based on feedback (client, engineers, field teams).
- Coordinate with procurement, suppliers, and stock to ensure required components are available.
Site Supervision & Implementation
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate site installation teams (contractors, laborers, subcontractors) on irrigation projects.
- Ensure that the installation adheres to drawings, specifications, quality, safety, and best practices.
- Monitor progress, manage daily site log, and resolve technical issues in the field.
- Serve as a liaison between design office, clients, and on-site teams to clarify design intent and adjust for site conditions.
- Quality control: inspect completed works (pipe alignment, slope, emitter spacing, pressure, coverage).
- Commissioning: assist in system testing, balancing, troubleshooting, and client handover.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols, site housekeeping, and environmental guidelines.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Diploma, National Certificate, or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or related field.
- Proven experience 3–5 years in draughting irrigation systems or pipelines design and/or in field supervision of irrigation installations.
- Experience working in agricultural, vineyard, or orchard irrigation projects is a plus.
Technical & Software Skills
- Proficiency in CAD (AutoCAD or similar).
- Knowledge of irrigation design principles (flow, pressure, emitter spacing, hydraulics).
- Ability to read site survey, topographic, and soil maps.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt designs to on-site constraints.
- Basic computing skills (Excel, Word, email, etc.).
Supervisory & Interpersonal Skills
- Leadership skills: able to manage and motivate field teams.
- Communication: clear, professional interaction with clients, staff, subcontractors.
- Organizational: ability to plan, schedule, and prioritize tasks under pressure.
- Attention to detail, quality assurance, and commitment to standards.
- Flexibility: willingness to travel to sites across the region and adapt to variable site conditions.
Other Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to work outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather / terrain conditions.
- Safety conscious, with the ability to enforce safe practices on site.
Performance Metrics / KPIs
You may consider measuring performance through:
- Accuracy and quality of design (few design revisions / errors)
- Timeliness of delivering drawings and materials lists
- Adherence to project schedules and budget on site
- Quality acceptance rate (minimal defects)
- Client / stakeholder satisfaction
- Safety record (zero lost-time incidents)
